First megawatt-size fuel cell power plant in Europe inaugurated

Category: Press release, Date: 19 Sep 2016

Aliaxis is pleased to announce that the first megawatt-size fuel cell power plant in Europe has been inaugurated on the premises of its German subsidiary FRIATEC.

In partnership with E.ON and Fuel Cell Energy Solutions, a 1.4 MW state of the art fuel cell plant has been built at the FRIATEC site in Mannheim. It will generate around 60% of the site’s annual power needs. The start-up of this fuel cell plant will reduce CO2 emissions by 3,000 tons annually.

“This investment underlines the commitment of Aliaxis towards greater sustainability in manufacturing and to a reduction in CO2 emissions across our operations”, says Laurent Lenoir, CEO. “The Group has implemented energy savings programs across the globe over 2013-2016. With energy management being a key pillar in our environmental strategy, these efforts will be continued, along with a reduction of non-recycled wastes and water consumption optimisation.”

More about fuel cell power plants

A fuel cell is a device that generates electricity through a highly efficient chemical reaction. Hydrogen is the basic fuel of such a fuel cell, but it also requires oxygen. One great appeal of fuel cells is that they generate electricity with very little pollution and no emissions at all – much of the hydrogen and oxygen used in generating electricity ultimately combine to form a harmless by-product, namely water.

Every fuel cell has two electrodes, one positive (anode) and one negative (cathode). The reactions that produce electricity take place at the electrodes. The electrical current produced can be directed outside the cell to do work, such as powering a production plant or illuminating a city.
